FRSC conducts fresh clampdown on false number plates, vehicle overloading in Benue

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has initiated a fresh enforcement operation in Benue State to arrest motorists who contravene vehicle registration and road traffic laws, especially those whose infractions pose possible security risks.

Tagged “Operation Guduma”, the exercise is the second phase of a special countrywide intervention patrol including Benue and 11 other states.

The operation took five days, started November 2, 2026.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, represented by Corps Commander Christopher Haruna Kuje, stated that the operation would target vehicles with fake, concealed, defaced or expired number plates as well as unregistered vehicles at the flag-off ceremony which held at Agan Toll Gate, Makurdi on Tuesday.

He said the exercise would also see the arrest of motorists involved in overloading persons, animals and commodities.

Explaining the name, Kuje, who was accompanied by the Benue State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Victory A. Kayode-Oni, said Guduma which means hammer in Hausa, symbolised the Corps’ determination to clamp down on traffic violations and address security challenges associated with vehicles that could not be properly identified.

He said the use of fraudulent or non-existent car registration numbers makes it harder for security authorities to identify the names of vehicle owners and monitor them when criminal acts are reported.

The Corps Commander further disclosed that officials from the national headquarters of the FRSC had been drafted to supervise the operation in coordination with the state commands and other security agencies.

The first part of the Operation Guduma, which was undertaken between May 18 and 22, 2026, led to the arrest of almost 1,600 motorists across 11 states, Kuje said in an explanation of the first phase of Operation Guduma.

The apprehended criminals were taken through due legal processes, he said, while motorists detected using counterfeit diplomatic number plates were handed over to the Department of State Services for additional investigation.

“Vehicle owners and drivers should comply with the registration requirements and other traffic regulations,” Kuje said, adding that the enforcement operation will not finish with the special patrol.

He cautioned that after November 6, 2026, when the five-day countrywide intervention is set to expire, state commands will continue the operation.
