Afrobeats singer Magixx has said it is impossible for a Nigerian artiste to make money in music without having a hit song that appeals to the worldwide audience.
In an episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, Magixx said artistes should continue releasing hit songs after their initial hit song to keep them financially viable.
He disclosed that even after Don Jazzy signed him on Mavin Records, it took him 2-3 months to start profiting from music.
Even the performance fees are influenced by the number of popular songs a performer has, the singer said.
“Even if you’re an artist signed to a big record label, you have to put out a song that has international appeal before you start making serious money.
It took me 2-3 months after I was signed by Don Jazzy to start making money from music.
I was broke, behind on payments and family obligations before the money started rolling in.
The toughest part is when I ask people to help me with money, they will claim I am signed to a large label and money shouldn’t be my problem.
It was hard since I had to maintain the lifestyle of a superstar with the expensive designer clothes.
But ultimately the money did come.
“You can get N500,000 – N700,000 per show with one hit song, and N1.5 million with another hit,” Magixx said.
