Lagos closes Surulere church over noise pollution

The Lagos State Government has closed down the All Christians Gathering Ministry, Surulere for alleged noise pollution after a complaint from a resident in the neighbourhood.

The closure was a consequence of an investigation by government officials, said the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement posted on his X account on Sunday.

The ministry started investigating the church after a homeowner lodged a complaint regarding excessive noise from the church premises, Wahab said.

The investigation revealed that the church was in contravention of environmental standards and was causing a nuisance to those living in the vicinity, he said.

Following the results, the church located at No 1 Ishola Street, off Clegg, Surulere, was sealed on Sunday by officials. Wahab said the facility would be closed till further notice.

The commissioner said the state government would not let any person or group of persons to participate in activities that contravene environmental laws or the peace and wellbeing of the population.

He said the religious organisations, commercial establishments and other institutions had to conform to the environmental norms and warned that the government will not compromise on enforcing the regulations.

“We will not allow environmental violations or any nuisance that will disturb the peace and well-being of the residents.

All religious organisations, enterprises and other establishments must fully comply with the environmental standards.

“We will continue to be firm and decisive in our enforcement activities.

“Nobody, no institution is above the law,” Wahab remarked
